Doughnut or donut is a ring-shaped flour dough, deep-fried and served with sweet toppings. Sprinkled with sugar powder, coated with frosting or glazed with maple syrup, a doughnut can go with all kinds of ingredients and flavors. In addition to toppings, a wide variety of fillings like, custard, cream, chocolate, peanut butter, jam and jelly are commonly used. This iconic street snack features the hole in the middle of the fried dough. However, the origin of this shape is unknown. Some said that a ship captain was having his snack while a sudden storm hit. Thus, he stuck the fried dough on the wheel to free his hands for to steer. Another story was that the doughnut originally made with a nut in the middle of the dough. However, the nut was poked out and left a hole in the middle. A more convincing explanation is that venders made the dough into ring-shape, so that they can carry the snack with a long stick. No matter which story is true, doughnut is loved by all culture and can be found in different forms around the world.
